The sun has finally, if temporarily, ceased its curmudgeonly behaviour and has had the good seasonal grace to put on its hat and come out to play.Summer’s forte lies in promises rather than foreplay and as these promises are so often unfulfilled we are normally caught with our pants on; which overdressed state is no way to enjoy the good seeing to that summer is about to give us. The fly curtain is up, signalling open door time, and it’s time for a post coital glass of wine after summer’s first delicious embrace.
bored of the flies…..

I’ll drink to that! Hope the sun is promiscuous enough to spread some of the love around here.
Here’s hoping….:)
Fly curtains always signal the return of summer – and wasps…
…we’ve been lucky in that the wasps that appear around and,on occasion, in our house are not at all aggressive …they’re big but I just put a glass over them and slide a card underneath and put them out the window. I used to find wasps very intimidating and this has changed my view completely. I do a blog when the buggers sting me:)
I’ve noticed that flies don’t like a breeze but they seem to like bright sunlit rooms. When London gets hot and humid the electric fan works wonders – I stay cool and the flies leave home.
I bet there aren’t many cows or sheep around your house in London:)
No, but there are a surprising amount of dogs in back gardens round here 😉
All our windows and doors have screens. I like that.
All seems well in your early summer Vendee: words like ‘foreplay’ and ‘post-coital’ surely would not arrive in print otherwise . . . But it seems to me we Down Under could still teach you the importance of using the ‘Aussie wave’ . . . 🙂 !!!
I’m interested to know more about the “Aussie wave”….:)
*laugh* Well, with hand sideways onto your face, move it endlessly left>right>left etc 😀 !! All summer!! Kind’of ‘normal’ here . . . A better bet would be ‘THE’ hat: fasten used wine corks onto short pieces of string . . . perforate edges of summer hat a few inches apart and hang these all around the brim : pretty much same idea as your fly curtain, which does work methinks but is not the most aesthetic item in your home!!!!! Yep, simple folk us Colonials 🙂 !!
Brilliant….love the “wave”:)
Heading back to Spain at the end of the month and not looking forward to the flies attracted by the goats nearby!
Goats and flies go together like English football supporters and tear gas:)
😕
Do those fly curtains really work?
They help…that’s the best you can say.
I’ve always been curious why screens haven’t caught on over there. It’s a must stateside. Granted the bug and fly problem isn’t as bad there.
I think you need a porch to make a screen work…it’s more to do with house design that anything else, I guess.
Over here we don’t have many windows that open out so we just screen the windows.
