Soft prawn….

I was engaged in the dexterous removal of clothing from some beautiful prawns which action brought to my mind the name of Dan Greenberg, the author of “How to be a Jewish Mother”, but also the author of a small volume, a copy of which has graced my book shelves for the last 4o or so years, and which travels under the self explanatory title of “Pornographics”. The book is introduced with the immortal words stating that “Dan Greenberg is no stranger to smut” which to my mind is a pretty damn good introduction for anyone. The thrust of the book (how else to phrase it) is to put clothes on the nude figures in famous classical paintings in order to eroticise them. This is achieved with carefully painted celluloid overlays or with cardboard cut outs that are articulated by tabs on the side of the pages. Thus the houris of a Delacroix harem are sexualised with an overlay of Victoria’s Secrets, or a naked angel in a Mannerist masterpiece by Tintoretto will have articulated wings that when moved by the tab at the edge of the page reveal that he has no manners whatsoever. The book is concluded by Marcel Duchamps’  “Nude  Descending a Staircase” which sports black rectangles scattered, willy nilly, all over the canvas. The point of all this is that I thought that the prawns looked a lot sexier with their clothes on. I chucked their discarded clothes in boiling water to make a broth. Could that be the origin of brothel? Nothing like a warming brothel on a grey afternoon.

Thanks for a truly unique history of art lesson, Roger. And I agree, the prawns become surprisingly photogenic with their clothes on.

  2. Prawns’ clothes make broth? I feel a culinary experiment coming on.

  3. The thrust of it in our household is that we’re hungry. Again. (MTM had a big laugh at the thrust of it.)

  4. Eha says:

Now, Mister: you seem to have omitted a whole lot of interesting, wellknown ‘nude’ figures avec said interesting ‘clothing’ on : we in Oz still have to ‘see’ the two-day-old ‘Victoria’s Secrets’ show without pics of ‘our own’ Miranda Kerr – sheesh, why the ‘tease’?

An incredible photo and an entertaining read. You’ve shared another great post, Roger, just as we’ve come to expect.

  6. Michelle says:

So I guess when our former Attorney General had drapes put on the Lady Liberty statue, he was actually eroticising them? Now, that’s a hoot.

  7. Mad Dog says:

    Amazing prawn broth!
A friend bought me Rude Food for Christmas last year – I’d forgotten how good it was, perhaps it’s improved with age 🙂

  8. spree says:

The photo’s jaw-dropping! Startling! Stunning! (and as usual amusing and smartly written.)

  9. Karen says:

Never thought about food with or without clothing before. I do know that your prawns clothing looks elegant in the broth…the eye looking like a sequin.

  10. From broth to Brothel? I will never look at a recipe the same way again.

  11. I began admiring your photo.. but *blush had to avert my eyes and instead enjoyed your text:D

  12. Now that is some delicious looking prawns. Very brothy. Very Filipino.
