I needed no convincing of your thesis which made me all the more surprised when I found that you had convinced me of the importance of what I knew to be the truth. There are so many sane people writing about food but unfortunately they are outnumbered by the dull, the obsessed and the fuckers who write “yum”. The Orwell quote is perfect and I can see how it meant nothing to me when I read it as an 18 year old student to whom food was only fuel.

Is Food Writing Important?

Some people eat to live, but I most definitely live to eat. I feel sorry for those who don’t really appreciate food, but at the end of the day, perhaps that means all the more for me 😉
….and me:)
Great article Roger! Food is culture. If we lack of culture, we are worth nothing,
I think that’s right.
Great post, Roger. I must now guard against writing ‘Yum’ in one of your comments. I have no wish to be a fucker 😀
But food is more than fundamental: those who have a sensual attitude to it have a similar outlook on life. I love coming here for that.
“I have no wish to be a fucker, my Lord” sounds like a vain plea from the dock – love it:)
I must remember it if I’m ever up for extortion or suchlike.
Kate, what’s the suchlike that comes a poor second to extortion?
Thank you Roger for sharing the article. I am now scared to even think the word “yum” when I read your posts :).
We must cast the word from our minds. I shall be beating myself on a regular basis each time the word enters my mind:)
Can I say “yum?” Lol seriously though, great HuffPo article. Thanks for sharing!
Glad you liked it. It certainly grabbed me.
Fully agree on the ‘yum’! If in a hurry and ‘suffering’ from writer’s block have committed this admittedly heineous literary and culinary sin more than once 😉 !
It happens – I don’t like it when it happens:)
A great article by Mr Ruhlman, Roger! Thanks for sharing! (And just so you know, I doubt there will be an occasion on which you publish one of your recipes or alluring food photos that I will not NOW be tempted to respond simply, YUM!!!) 😉
Why did I open myself to this Yummy Pandora’s lunchbox?
That was a great article. (Of course, those of us who write about food may be predisposed to agree with the premise…but still.) And I join the chorus of commenters who may or may not use the phrase “yum” more liberally in your presence going forward. 🙂
I can live with “yum” but I can’t live without food and writing:)
I think that’s the right compromise if you had to choose. Fortunately, you don’t. 🙂
You’re so right. I am more and more aware of this as I grow older.
Well, I will do my part to keep this a yum-free zone. Now what’s this about “food as fuel”? This was certainly not my experience. As a member of the Bartolini Clan, food is everything! 🙂
It just took me a long time to uncover the truth:)
A day without good food (or good wine) is a sad day indeed…thank god we don´t all see food just as fuel.
I was a callow youth:)
Food is love! And I am setting myself a task to refrain from using those three letters!
Good on you Tandy. Enough of the “Y” word, and more of the why word:)
